Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can stomach Pain Along With Diarrhoea Be Treated?
I have a 10 year daughter who seems to get a lot of stomach pain sometimes with diarrhea; sometimes without and also can have a low grade fever around 99 with it. The last 2 days she complained of a headache also. I asked if everything is okay at school and she says yes so I don t think it s anxiety. But; I am getting concerned why this keeps happening.
I would like you to stop taking immodium. Immodium contains loperamide which should not be used for diarrhoea of acute onset.
It causes bloating of the stomach and loss of appetite in worse cases it might cause a systemic infection. Please do not take this tablet without the supervision of your doctor.
A better drug in this regard would be Racecadotril which is an antisecretory agent (reduces the water content of the stool), please ask your doctor for a prescription.
Most of the diarrhoeas are self-limiting and only good hydration with water and fruit juices are required.
However, if diarrhoea prolongs for more than two days along with high-grade fever and colicky abdominal pain then antibiotics should be taken for 5 days.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
